Potter's Wheel Taster Experience

this activity involves face-to-face, one-to-one instruction, with the student & tutor less than 1m apart over the wheel, for at least 20 minutes per person.
We hope to be able to offer these workshops again soon - pending Government, WHO and RBWM EHO guidance.

Clay & Tuition: £ per person / per pot (STANDARD PACKAGE)

+ Return to glaze & fire: +£ per person / per pot (PREMIUM PACKAGE)

What is included?

  • This taster experience will introduce you to the basic skills of working with clay on the potter's wheel, providing you with an understanding of what it takes to use the potter's wheel to create a pot. 
  • One-to-one tuition, step-by-step, therefore no previous experience is required. 
  • You will make one pot as shown in the photos. 
  • All necessary tools and equipment will be provided – including aprons, clay and use of our wheel.
  • PREMIUM Package Only: leave your pot(s) with us to be fired - giving them strength then, return to decorate your pot(s) with our coloured glazes and leave them to be fired a second time - which makes them watertight & foodsafe, ready for everyday use.


Who can do this? 
  • This activity is for complete beginners... those who would like to tick it off their "bucket list"!!  Anyone age 5yrs (Year 1 at school) to 105yrs!....  However, please note, the success rate will varty according to the age of the participant.

Is this a group class?

  • No, this is private one-to-one tuition, with our potter, on our wheel.  We have one wheel & one tutor, so tuition is provided to one person at a time. 
  • We do run the following group classes: our popular 10-week Adult Ceramics Courses and shorter "Introduction to Pottery" and Holiday Clay Workshops if you would like to journey further into the world of ceramics.

How long does it take?

  • This is a "taster experience", the aim is to provide you with a taste of what it is like to "throw" a pot. 
  • The tuition takes approximately 20-30 minutes per person/pot... you can book to throw as many pots as you like to increase the length of your time at the wheel.
  • We have one wheel & one tutor, so groups will need to take their turn, one at a time.
    Premium Package: your return visit to decorate your pot with glazes takes approximately 1-1.5hrs.  Please Note: we can only keep your fired pots for a maximum of 3 months so please come back to collect them after you have decorated them.

When can I have a go?

  • Saturdays: bookings taken every half hour between 10am-3.30pm,
  • or Tues-Fri afternoons during the school holidays between 1-3.30pm

includes Clay & personalised Tuition on our Potter's Wheel: experience what it is like to "throw your own pot", Step-by-Step under the careful guidance of our friendly Tutor; take your pot home the same day then decorate it with acrylic paints at home once it has dried out; please note this pot will be suitable for display only it is not foodsafe or watertight)

PREMIUM Package: 2 activities on 2 different days: £30 per person/per pot ...

1st activity: includes Clay & personalised Tuition on our Potter's Wheel


Leave your pot with us to be dried out slowly over 5 days then we will Fire it for you;

2nd activity: return two weeks later to Decorate your Fired pot with our coloured brush-on glazes; leave your pot with us to be dipped it in a clear glaze - we will then Fire your pot a Second time which will make it Foodsafe & Watertight; Collect your glazed & fired masterpiece one week after you decorated it.

Terms & Conditions
Potter's Wheel Taster Experience bookings are subject to availability.  Bookings should be paid for in full at point of purchase - at least 48 hours before your activity time & date.  Payments can be made in person at the studio or by card over the phone, during our opening hours Tues-Sat 10am-5pm tel. 01753 206 265; or by Bank Transfer (details on request).  Payments are non-refundable.  Booking alterations are subject to availability and require 14 days notice.  Maximum 2 alterations allowed within 3 months of the original booking date.  In the unusual event of Hands-on Art Adventures cancelling an activity booking, an alternative date or full refund will be offered.  All groups are allocated a specific time period to accommodate other bookings, please ensure your group arrive and depart on time. PREMIUM Package only: Your pot(s) will be ready for collection one week after your party date.  We quality check every item when it comes out of the kiln, before we pack it ready for you to collect.  You are very welcome to unpack your pot(s) in the Studio before taking them home.  Unfortunately we cannot be held responsible for any damage that occurs to pots once they have been taken from the Studio.
